Henk Roozendaal - Work in progress

Work in progress

By popular demand I'll show what I'm doing step by step. An older example is shown in the section 'How I work'.

dated 2011 until 2011, comment to the artist (click on an image to enlarge an artwork)

  • These are Kim, Ian and Liz from Curacao. I've painted the two girls in 2008 already. See section "kids', work 'Blessings'. The picture is made out of two different shots. On top of that the right side of the garden is replaced by one single yellow flamboyant. This is done by MS Paint. Printed on scale 1:6.

  • Close-up

    2011

I make a separate print of every head on scale 1:3.

  • Drawing

    2011

With a little help of Michelangelo's grid I draw this group in 2 days.

  • Figures in black & white, the background in 1 basic color (in this case light green).

  • Sometimes I paint the skin first en do the clothing  the last. In this case I prefer to do it the other way around.

  • Shadows

    2011

I've painted the mouth and eyes first and started on the shadows.

The color separations have to follow the three-dimensional shape of the face.

  • I chose fairly natural colors because the dress is already so colorful.

  • The most transparent colors, I have already given a second coating.

  • I paint the kids one by one to give them a different complexion.

  • Now I can start at the details in the background.

Now I'm ready for a long finishing touch: repainting each color field, each line, each spot...
